Judul hari

Manusia bersembunyi, lalu menyalahkan. Allah datang, lalu bertanya. Yang pertama berbicara sesudah dosa bukan manusia yang minta ampun, melainkan Allah yang mencari: “Di manakah engkau?” (3:9).

Sabat Sore: Sang Pencipta Berfirman

26 September · menit 3–6, Ayat Hafalan

Ibr. 1:1-2; 2 Ptr. 3:13

Gunanya: satu kalimat sesudah Ayat Hafalan dibaca. Ia membuat kelas memperhatikan dua kata pembuka yang biasanya dilewati.

“The curtain that separates the visible from the invisible world is lifted, and we behold the conflict of the opposing forces of good and evil, from the first entrance of sin, to the final triumph of righteousness and truth; and all is but a revelation of the character of God.”

Christian Education, hlm. 65.1.

Tiga sumber. Ambil Ellen G. White dari Patriarchs and Prophets lebih dulu; dua lainnya cadangan.

“The holy pair were not only children under the fatherly care of God but students receiving instruction from the all-wise Creator. They were visited by angels, and were granted communion with their Maker, with no obscuring veil between.”

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 50.3.

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 50.3. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Gunanya: frasa “no obscuring veil between” dikutip Komentar Guru resmi dalam pertanyaan penerapannya.

“As soon as the holy pair transgressed the law of the Most High, the brightness from the face of God departed from the face of nature. Nature is now marred and defiled by sin. But God’s object lessons are not obliterated; even now, rightly studied and interpreted, she speaks of her Creator.”

Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, hlm. 186.1.

Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, hlm. 186.1. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Satu kalimat pengantar, lalu kutipan Patriarchs and Prophets. Jangan buka diskusi di sini.

Pertanyaan cadangan

Kej. 3:1-8; Yer. 23:24; Ibr. 4:13; 1 Yoh. 4:8; Mzm. 104:1-2

Apa yang dikerjakan hari ini

Menunjukkan reaksi pertama dosa: bukan mencari Allah, melainkan menjauh dari-Nya.

  • Kebebasan memilih bukan cacat ciptaan.

“Our first parents, though created innocent and holy, were not placed beyond the possibility of wrongdoing. God made them free moral agents, capable of appreciating the wisdom and benevolence of His character and the justice of His requirements, and with full liberty to yield or to withhold obedience.”

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 48.4.

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 48.4. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

“But after his sin, he could no longer find joy in holiness, and he sought to hide from the presence of God. Such is still the condition of the unrenewed heart. It is not in harmony with God, and finds no joy in communion with Him.”

Steps to Christ, hlm. 17.2.

Steps to Christ, hlm. 17.2. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

“Sin fills us with fear of God; when we have sinned, we try to hide ourselves from him. But whatever our sin, God bids us come unto him through Jesus Christ. It is only by taking our sins to God that we can be freed from them.”

The Review and Herald, 9 Februari 1897, par. 2. Buka paragraf ini. Dikutip dalam That I May Know Him, hlm.

The Review and Herald, 9 Februari 1897, par. 2. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Gunanya: penyeimbang.

Selasa: Allah Mencari Manusia

29 September · menit 6–16, hari yang menanggung beban

Kej. 3:9-13; Luk. 15:11-32; Luk. 22:61; Rm. 7:15; 7:24-25

  • Allah mengajukan empat pertanyaan sebelum menjatuhkan satu hukuman pun.
  • Yesus memandang Petrus (Luk. 22:61). Tanpa kata-kata, itu pun sebuah panggilan.

Kutipan untuk hari ini

Enam sumber.

“The spirit of self-justification originated in the father of lies; it was indulged by our first parents as soon as they yielded to the influence of Satan, and has been exhibited by all the sons and daughters of Adam. Instead of humbly confessing their sins, they try to shield themselves by casting the blame upon others, upon circumstances, or upon God—making even His blessings an occasion of murmuring against Him.”

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 58.1.

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 58.1. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

“But while he is yet ‘a great way off’ the father discerns his form. Love is of quick sight. Not even the degradation of the years of sin can conceal the son from the father’s eyes. He ‘had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck’ in a long, clinging, tender embrace.”

Christ’s Object Lessons, hlm. 203.1.

Christ’s Object Lessons, hlm. 203.1. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

“The sight of that pale, suffering face, those quivering lips, that look of compassion and forgiveness, pierced his heart like an arrow. Conscience was aroused. Memory was active.”

The Desire of Ages, hlm. 713.1.

Hati nuraninya terbangun. Ingatannya bekerja.”

The Desire of Ages, hlm. 713.1. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

(Parafrase dari Flame of Yahweh, hlm. 58–59.)

“Allah tahu di mana Adam bersembunyi. Ia bertanya supaya Adam sendiri yang keluar. Dan Adam keluar sambil menunjuk orang lain.”

Pertanyaan cadangan

Kej. 3:14-24; Kel. 19:16-22; Yes. 59:2; Yoh. 14:1-3

“Adam, in his innocence, had enjoyed open communion with his Maker; but sin brought separation between God and man, and the atonement of Christ alone could span the abyss and make possible the communication of blessing or salvation from heaven to earth. Man was still cut off from direct approach to his Creator, but God would communicate with him through Christ and angels.”

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 67.2. Buka paragraf ini. Dikutip dalam Lift Him Up, hlm.

Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 67.2. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Kalau blok 27–33 dipotong menjadi satu hari, inilah harinya. Bacakan 3:15, lalu kalimat bawa pulang.

Pertanyaan cadangan

Kamis: Juru Bicara Allah

1 Oktober · menit 16–27, pertanyaan besar kedua

Ibr. 1:1-2; Rm. 1:19-20; Bil. 12:6; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Yoh. 14:7-9; 10:27-30; Luk. 19:10; Yoh. 16:13

Apa yang dikerjakan hari ini

Menyusun cara-cara Allah berbicara sesudah dosa (alam, nabi, Kitab Suci, Anak, Roh) dan menaruh Anak di puncaknya.

Bacakan Ibrani 1:1-2, lalu minta orang lain membacakan Yohanes 14:8-9. Filipus sudah tiga tahun bersama Yesus. Lalu Pertanyaan 2 di Bagian 5. Kalau satu orang menguasai diskusi, kelompok tiga orang selama empat menit.

“In his lessons and his mighty works, Christ is a perfect revelation of God. This Christ declares through the inspired evangelist. ‘No man hath seen God at any time,’ he says; ‘the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.’ ‘No man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.’ These words show the importance of studying Christ’s character. Only by knowing Christ can we know God.”

The Review and Herald, 20 Juli 1897, par. 10. Buka paragraf ini. Dikutip dalam In Heavenly Places, hlm.

The Review and Herald, 20 Juli 1897, par. 10. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Jumat: Ellen G. White

2 Oktober · menit 27–33, satu kalimat

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, pasal 1–6, hlm. 17–63

Apa yang dikerjakan hari ini

Memperkenalkan nabi zaman modern bukan lewat penglihatannya, melainkan lewat pertobatannya.

  • Seorang pendeta Methodist, Levi Stockman, menolongnya melihat kasih Allah.

“In my mind the justice of God eclipsed His mercy and love. The mental anguish I passed through at this time was very great. I had been taught to believe in an eternally burning hell; and as I thought of the wretched state of the sinner without God, without hope, I was in deep despair. I feared that I should be lost, and that I should live throughout eternity suffering a living death. The horrifying thought was ever before me, that my sins were too great to be forgiven, and that I should be forever lost.”

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, hlm. 29.3.

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, hlm. 29.3. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

“All the paternal love which has come down from generation to generation through the channel of human hearts, all the springs of tenderness which have opened in the souls of men, are but as a tiny rill to the boundless ocean when compared with the infinite, exhaustless love of God. Tongue cannot utter it; pen cannot portray it.”

Testimonies for the Church, jil. 5, hlm. 740.1.

Testimonies for the Church, jil. 5, hlm. 740.1. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Gunanya: Komentar Guru menyebut kasih kebapaan Allah sebagai tema kesukaannya sepanjang hidup. Cadangan.

Keduanya berdiri sendiri: pengantar menyampaikan faktanya, lalu pertanyaannya membuka penilaian.

Kalimat pertama Allah sesudah dosa menentukan sifat semua firman nubuat sesudahnya.

17). Pemeriksaan sebelum putusan menjawab tuduhan itu.

Cara menjaganya tetap terbuka

Lihat Bagian 8.

Cara menjaganya tetap terbuka

Bacaan Jumat yang ditugaskan: Ellen G. White, Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, pasal 1–6, hlm. 17–63. Buka daftar isinya. Halaman Further Study dari Ellen G. White Estate untuk pelajaran ini juga menyarankan artikel Merlin D. Burt, “My Burden Left Me”, Adventist Review, 25 Oktober 2001, hlm. 8–12, tentang tahap-tahap pertobatannya.

Artikel “My Burden Left Me” adalah tulisan Merlin Burt, bukan Ellen G. White. Kalau dikutip, katakan “Burt menulis”. Dan kalimat “seolah-olah Allah berbicara kepadanya” adalah kalimat pelajaran, bukan kalimat Ellen G. White.

Paragraf yang layak dibacakan

“Faith now took possession of my heart. I felt an inexpressible love for God, and had the witness of His Spirit that my sins were pardoned. My views of the Father were changed. I now looked upon Him as a kind and tender parent, rather than a stern tyrant compelling men to a blind obedience. My heart went out toward Him in a deep and fervent love.”

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, hlm. 39.1. Buka paragraf ini

“Iman sekarang menguasai hati saya.

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, hlm. 39.1. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Berhenti sesudah “deep and fervent love”.

Hampir semuanya diambil dari buku kompilasi (Reflecting Christ, The Faith I Live By, That I May Know Him, Lift Him Up, To Be Like Jesus, In Heavenly Places, Sons and Daughters of God). Kompilasi itu sah, tetapi di penuntun ini setiap kutipan dirujuk ke tulisan aslinya: misalnya kutipan hari Rabu dari Lift Him Up, hlm. 324, adalah Patriarchs and Prophets, hlm. 67. Kalau Anda membacakan, sebut sumber aslinya.

Ujilah segala sesuatu” (1 Tes. 5:20-21).

“The Spirit was not given—nor can it ever be bestowed—to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures explicitly state that the word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested.”

The Great Controversy, hlm. vii.3.

The Great Controversy, hlm. vii.3. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

“Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light.”

The Review and Herald, 20 Januari 1903, par. 9. Buka paragraf ini. Dikutip dalam Colporteur Ministry, hlm. 125

The Review and Herald, 20 Januari 1903, par. 9. Terjemahan kerja, bukan edisi Indonesia resmi

Jadi setujui separuhnya.

Lalu biarkan Alkitab menafsirkan Alkitab.

Steps to Christ, hlm.

Kalau waktunya sempit, biarkan lewat.

A Lampiran A: Semua Ayat dalam Terjemahan Baru

18 semak duri dan rumput duri yang akan dihasilkannya bagimu, dan tumbuh-tumbuhan di padang akan menjadi makananmu;

A3. Lukas 15:11-32, untuk blok Selasa

11 Yesus berkata lagi: “Ada seorang mempunyai dua anak laki-laki.

19 Bunyi sangkakala kian lama kian keras.

Mzm 104:1Pujilah Tuhan, hai jiwaku! Tuhan, Allahku, Engkau sangat besar!
Luk 22:61Lalu berpalinglah Tuhan memandang Petrus.
Yoh 14:2Di rumah Bapa-Ku banyak tempat tinggal.

1 Tes 5:20dan janganlah anggap rendah nubuat-nubuat.

Day titles
The Indonesian pane translates the lesson and day titles as working titles. In class, use the titles printed on your own lesson sheet.

“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;”

Hebrews 1:1, 2 (KJV). The lesson prints it in the NKJV.

1 What This Week Is Actually Arguing

Last week the church closed a whole quarter on 1 and 2 Corinthians. This week a new quarter opens, on The Gift of Prophecy, and its first lesson does not start with a prophet. It starts in a garden.

The claim is simple: prophecy exists because the face-to-face conversation broke. Before sin, Adam and Eve needed no prophet. After sin, God did not stop speaking. He changed how: through nature, through prophets, through Scripture, and finally through His Son (Heb. 1:1, 2).

Genesis 3 moves in two directions. The humans hide, then blame. God comes, then asks. The first voice after sin is not a sinner asking forgiveness but God searching: “Where art thou?” (3:9). Every prophet after that is the same question in another voice.

What the lesson is not saying: that prophets replace Christ or add to the Bible. Hebrews 1 places every prophet before the Son. Nor does it say nature has gone silent. Nature still speaks, but nature is damaged too.

Where the week is heading: this quarter will test prophets for thirteen weeks. Week one sets the measure first. A true prophet always points to the Son, because the Son is the fullest way God has spoken.

2 Objectives

  • Know

That prophecy was born of God’s decision to keep speaking after sin ended face-to-face fellowship, and that every way God speaks culminates in His Son.

  • Feel

The relief of someone hiding who is called, not to be sentenced first, but to be found.

  • Do

One thing you have been avoiding in prayer: name it to God by its own name, once, before sunset on Friday, without naming anyone else in the same sentence.

3 Discussion Plan, 40 Minutes

  • This adult class has heard Genesis 3 dozens of times. The enemy is not confusion but recognition: “we know this one.” Nearly everyone will answer that God already knew where Adam was hiding. Use that. This week’s question starts after that answer: if God knew, why did He ask?
  • Elders and officers are in the room, so being wrong in public costs something. Ask for readings before verdicts. When an answer is wrong, do not correct it yourself: ask a second person to read the verse and let the text decide.
  • This quarter is on the gift of prophecy. Some in the class are very sure about Ellen G. White and some quietly doubt. This is not the week to argue about her; Friday only introduces her early life. If the argument starts, see Section 8, then park it for the weeks ahead.

Opening, minutes 0–3

“You have just hurt someone you love. Which do you choose: send a text, make a call, or go to their door? Hands up.”

Count the hands. Then:

“When we are the guilty one, face to face is hard. Adam and Eve chose the bushes. But the one who came to the door was God.”

Then the week’s claim in one sentence: after sin, God did not stop speaking. He changed how, and every way He speaks is a search that ends in His Son.

Every day has a slot: Sabbath afternoon in 3–6; Tuesday in 6–16; Thursday in 16–27; Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday in 27–33. Tuesday’s reading starts at 3:8, Monday’s last verse, so Monday’s hiding is already heard in the Tuesday block.

If time is cut, make 27–33 one sentence per day, and if there is time for only one, keep Wednesday: the promise in 3:15. Never cut the application. If one person dominates the Thursday block, break into threes for four minutes.

Application, minutes 33–38, and close, 38–40

Adam heard “Where art thou?” and answered with two things: I was afraid, and the woman whom thou gavest to be with me. Fear, then accusation.

“God still asks the same question, and He still is not asking because He does not know. This week, answer it. One thing you avoid in prayer: name it to God by its own name, once, before Friday evening. And do not name anyone else in the same sentence.”

At minute 38, read Genesis 3:9 once more, slowly. Then one sentence:

“Before there was a single prophet, God was already the first to speak. His first sentence to a sinner was not a verdict. It was a call to be found.”

Then pray. Do not summarize the lesson in the prayer.

Sabbath Afternoon: The Creator Speaks

26 September · minutes 3–6, Memory Text

Heb. 1:1, 2; 2 Pet. 3:13

What this day is doing

Framing the quarter: once face to face, then through prophets, then through the Son, and the goal is restoration.

Points to hold

  • In Greek the first word of Hebrews is not “God” but “at sundry times” (polumerōs), then “in divers manners” (polutropōs). The letter opens with variety, then closes it with one Son.
  • The lesson notes that prophets often wrote parts of the Bible, but not always. That small sentence matters for this quarter: a prophet is not measured by whether their writing entered the canon.
  • The goal is restoration: new heavens and a new earth (2 Pet. 3:13), where people see His face again (Rev. 22:4).

Quotes for this day

The epistle launches straight into doctrine, without the usual opening greeting of New Testament letters. In Greek the word for God does not come first; the word for “sundry times” does. (Paraphrase.)

Use: one sentence after the Memory Text is read. It makes the class notice two opening words they usually skip.

“The curtain that separates the visible from the invisible world is lifted, and we behold the conflict of the opposing forces of good and evil, from the first entrance of sin, to the final triumph of righteousness and truth; and all is but a revelation of the character of God.”

Christian Education, p. 65.1. Open this paragraph. Compiled in Reflecting Christ, p. 115, which the lesson prints

Christian Education, p. 65.1. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the lesson prints this paragraph on Sabbath afternoon. Its last clause frames the whole quarter: everything Scripture records, from the first sin to the final triumph, is a revelation of God’s character. In reserve for minutes 3–6.

“God did not begin with prophets. He began face to face. Every prophet after that is His way of not stopping.”

One person reads Hebrews 1:1, 2 from their Bible. Then ask: “This says God spoke in divers manners. Name one from the Old Testament.” Take two or three answers and move on.

Spare question

“Hebrews says God once spoke at sundry times and in divers manners: dreams, a burning bush, a voice on a mountain. If you could choose, which would you most want God to use with you, and why is that one so rare?”

Sunday: Communication in Eden

27 September · minutes 27–33

Gen. 1:27, 28; 2:15-17; 2:18; 2:23; 2:2, 3; 3:9

What this day is doing

Showing what was lost: conversation without a go-between.

Points to hold

  • Only humans are said to be made in God’s image (1:27). SDABC notes the verse is written as Hebrew poetry: the first line restated in other words in the next. Human creation is celebrated, not just reported.
  • God’s first words to Adam hold a wide permission and one prohibition (2:16, 17). Conversation in Eden had a boundary from the start. That is not distance; it is God treating humans as beings who can choose. See Monday.
  • The Sabbath (2:2, 3) is time set aside for that fellowship from the first week. A class sitting in Sabbath School is using what is left of Eden.

Quotes for this day

Three sources. Reach for Patriarchs and Prophets first; the other two are in reserve.

“The holy pair were not only children under the fatherly care of God but students receiving instruction from the all-wise Creator. They were visited by angels, and were granted communion with their Maker, with no obscuring veil between.”

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 50.3. Open this paragraph

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 50.3. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the phrase “no obscuring veil between” is quoted by the official Teacher Comments in its application questions. If Sunday gets only one sentence, this is it.

“As soon as the holy pair transgressed the law of the Most High, the brightness from the face of God departed from the face of nature. Nature is now marred and defiled by sin. But God’s object lessons are not obliterated; even now, rightly studied and interpreted, she speaks of her Creator.”

Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 186.1. Open this paragraph

Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 186.1. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: a bridge to Thursday, where nature is named as one way God speaks. “Nature is now marred” keeps the class from romanticizing nature.

The account of the fulfilment of the divine purpose is cast as Hebrew poetry: the thought of the first part of a stanza is repeated with slight changes of wording but not of meaning in the second, or even a third. (Paraphrase.)

“The first command a human ever heard was spoken face to face. The prohibition in Eden was not a sign that God was distant. It was a sign that God trusted humans to choose.”

One sentence of setup, then the Patriarchs and Prophets quotation. Do not open discussion here.

Spare question

From William Earnhardt’s Teaching Plan, ssnet.

“A child asks you: why can’t we see God’s face or hear His voice now, when Adam could? What do you tell them, in two sentences?”

Monday: Hiding From God

28 September · minutes 27–33, and verse 8 opens the Tuesday block

Gen. 3:1-8; Jer. 23:24; Heb. 4:13; 1 John 4:8; Ps. 104:1, 2

What this day is doing

Showing sin’s first reflex: not seeking God but moving away from Him.

Points to hold

  • The serpent’s promise was “ye shall be as gods.” What actually happened in 3:7: their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked. The knowledge promised turned out to be the knowledge of shame.
  • SDABC on 3:8: their fear was neither humility nor modesty but a deep sense of guilt. Footsteps that used to delight now alarmed them.
  • Hiding from God in God’s own garden is impossible (Jer. 23:24; Heb. 4:13). The class will smile at the absurdity. Let them, then ask where we do the same.
  • Free choice is not a design flaw. Forced love is not love (1 John 4:8). Ellen G. White says so plainly below.

Quotes for this day

“Our first parents, though created innocent and holy, were not placed beyond the possibility of wrongdoing. God made them free moral agents, capable of appreciating the wisdom and benevolence of His character and the justice of His requirements, and with full liberty to yield or to withhold obedience.”

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 48.4. Open this paragraph

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 48.4. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the lesson prints this. It is the best answer to “why did God put that tree there?” A page later she adds that without freedom of choice obedience would have been forced.

“But after his sin, he could no longer find joy in holiness, and he sought to hide from the presence of God. Such is still the condition of the unrenewed heart. It is not in harmony with God, and finds no joy in communion with Him.”

Steps to Christ, p. 17.2. Open this paragraph

Steps to Christ, p. 17.2. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: “Such is still the condition of the unrenewed heart” moves Genesis 3 from history into this room. Stop there.

“Sin fills us with fear of God; when we have sinned, we try to hide ourselves from him. But whatever our sin, God bids us come unto him through Jesus Christ. It is only by taking our sins to God that we can be freed from them.”

The Review and Herald, February 9, 1897, par. 2. Open this paragraph. Compiled in That I May Know Him, p. 260, which the lesson prints

The Review and Herald, February 9, 1897, par. 2. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the counterweight. Hiding is not the end of the story; the invitation is already there. A bridge to Tuesday.

God’s evening visits had always delighted the pair. Now the sound of His approach alarmed them. The reason for their fear was neither humility nor modesty but a profound sense of guilt. (Paraphrase.)

“Sin does not make God leave. Sin makes us run, to a place God can already see.”

Two sentences only in the 27–33 block. Verse 8 has already been read in the Tuesday block.

Spare question

“Adam and Eve hid among the trees, in a garden God Himself had planted. Where do people hide from God today without ever leaving church?”

Tuesday: God Seeks Humanity

29 September · minutes 6–16, the weight-bearing day

Gen. 3:9-13; Luke 15:11-32; Luke 22:61; Rom. 7:15; 7:24, 25

What this day is doing

Settling who speaks first after sin. Not the humans. God, and His first sentence is a question.

This is the weight-bearing day. Read Genesis 3:8-13 from the Bible, six verses. Ask the class to count God’s questions while they listen. Then Question 1 in Section 5, and let four to six seconds of silence sit.

Points to hold

  • God asks four questions before He pronounces a single sentence. “Where art thou?” (3:9); “Who told thee that thou wast naked?” and “Hast thou eaten of the tree…?” (3:11); “What is this that thou hast done?” (3:13). Judgment begins only at 3:14.
  • SDABC on 3:9: God called not from ignorance but to bring Adam to confession. Adam hid the sin behind its consequences: he talked about nakedness, not the tree. See Section 6, item 1, for the Hebrew.
  • The chain of blame: Adam points to “the woman whom thou gavest to be with me” (3:12), and so finally at God. Eve points at the serpent (3:13).
  • Richard Davidson, quoted in the Teacher Comments, reads the scene as a legal process: examination first, then verdict. Trial and call happen in the same scene.
  • In the prodigal son (Luke 15:20) the son seems to take the first step. SDABC rejects that conclusion: the lost sheep and the lost coin in the same chapter show that the initiative in salvation is God’s.
  • Jesus looked at Peter (Luke 22:61). Without words, that too was a call.

Quotes for this day

Six sources. Reach for SDABC on 3:9 and Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 58 first; the other four are in reserve for when the class asks.

God called Adam not as though ignorant of his hiding place, but to bring him to confession. Adam tried to hide the sin behind its consequences, his disobedience behind his shame. Here for the first time we see the confusion between sin and punishment that marks fallen humanity: the results of sin are felt and hated more than the sin itself. (Paraphrase.)

Use: the bold clause is the strongest sentence of the week. Read it after the class answers Question 1, around minute 12.

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 58.1. Open this paragraph

Use: it names the pattern: others, circumstances, or God. Three directions you can count on your fingers. Read at minutes 13–14.

“But while he is yet ‘a great way off’ the father discerns his form. Love is of quick sight. Not even the degradation of the years of sin can conceal the son from the father’s eyes. He ‘had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck’ in a long, clinging, tender embrace.”

Use: for when someone says “but in Luke 15 the son came home first.” The father saw him from far off; he was already watching.

In the parable the son appears to take the initiative in returning. Some conclude that the first step in reconciliation is the individual’s own will. That conclusion is unwarranted: in the lost sheep and the lost coin Jesus has already shown that the initiative in salvation is God’s. (Paraphrase.)

“The sight of that pale, suffering face, those quivering lips, that look of compassion and forgiveness, pierced his heart like an arrow. Conscience was aroused. Memory was active.”

Use: for Luke 22:61, which the lesson cites today. In reserve.

When God comes to the garden after the sin, He opens what amounts to a legal process. He first examines the “defendants”, and their defensive, accusing answers show the rupture between husband and wife and between them and God. Only then is sentence pronounced. (Paraphrase of Flame of Yahweh, pp. 58, 59.)

“God knew where Adam was hiding. He asked so that Adam would come out himself. And Adam came out pointing at someone else.”

Spare question

“In Genesis 3 God asks four questions before He pronounces a single sentence. If you are a parent, a teacher, or a boss, what would change this week if you used that order?”

Wednesday: Expelled From the Garden

30 September · minutes 27–33, the day to keep if time runs out

Gen. 3:14-24; Exod. 19:16-22; Isa. 59:2; John 14:1-3

What this day is doing

Showing what sin cost communication: distance, a go-between, a boundary. Then the promise spoken right in the middle of the judgment.

Points to hold

  • 3:15 is called “the first gospel promise.” The Teacher Comments call it the literary center of Genesis 3: the promise is spoken inside the judgment, not after it.
  • Coats of skins (3:21). The text does not mention a sacrifice; but for there to be skins, an animal died. SDABC reads them as a reminder of death as the wages of sin and of the promised Lamb. See Section 8, “Where the lesson is thin.”
  • Cherubim east of the garden (3:24) guard the way to the tree of life. See Section 6, item 3: the cherubim appear again over the ark.
  • At Sinai the people themselves ask for a go-between: “Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die” (Exod. 20:19). The first request for a prophet came from frightened people.
  • The Sinai boundary (19:21, 22): SDABC notes the warning was repeated because some were ready to break through and gaze irreverently.

Quotes for this day

Four sources. Ellen G. White first; SDABC on 3:21 if someone asks about the skins.

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 67.2. Open this paragraph. Compiled in Lift Him Up, p. 324, which the lesson prints

Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 67.2. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: one paragraph that explains the whole quarter. Humanity is cut off from direct approach, “but God would communicate with him through Christ and angels.” If Wednesday shrinks to one sentence, read that last one.

Before expelling them God gave them more durable clothing for the hard work and harsher weather after the Fall. The skins were also a constant reminder of lost innocence, of death as the wages of sin, and of the promised Lamb of God who by His death would take away the sin of the world. They must die that humans might live. (Paraphrase.)

Here the Lord turns from the literal serpent to the old serpent, the devil. This judgment, in prophetic language, has always been understood by the Christian church as a prediction of the coming Deliverer. SDABC calls that reading unquestionably correct, and adds that the prophecy is also literally true. (Paraphrase.)

Dru Johnson: the cherubim guarding Eden are more than armed guards; they mark the beginning of God’s presence drawn back to heaven, and a mediated presence on earth through symbols and messengers. Jiří Moskala: God’s promise to send the Seed is the foundation and key for recognizing the prophetic voice in the Old Testament. (Paraphrase.)

“Before Adam and Eve left the garden, the promise had already been spoken. As soon as there was sin, there was a promised Saviour.”

If the 27–33 block shrinks to one day, this is the day. Read 3:15, then the take-home line.

Spare question

“At Sinai the people told Moses: you speak to us, not God, or we will die. Was that request faith, fear, or both? And when do we use a pastor or a teacher the same way?”

Thursday: God’s Spokespeople

1 October · minutes 16–27, the second big question

Heb. 1:1, 2; Rom. 1:19, 20; Num. 12:6; 2 Tim. 3:16, 17; John 14:7-9; 10:27-30; Luke 19:10; John 16:13

What this day is doing

Laying out the ways God speaks after sin (nature, prophets, Scripture, the Son, the Spirit) and putting the Son at the top.

Read Hebrews 1:1, 2, then have someone else read John 14:8, 9. Philip had been with Jesus three years. Then Question 2 in Section 5. If one person dominates, threes for four minutes.

Points to hold

  • God spoke “by the prophets” and “by his Son” (Heb. 1:1, 2). In Greek there is a small difference that matters. See Section 6, item 2.
  • Visions and dreams are God’s usual way with prophets (Num. 12:6). SDABC adds that God promises to keep using them (Joel 2:28; Amos 3:7). A bridge to Friday.
  • Nature still speaks (Rom. 1:19, 20), but the lesson is honest: nature also shows the Fall, and the death of every living thing is the strongest example.
  • “My sheep hear my voice” (John 10:27). Hearing here is relationship, not information: “and I know them, and they follow me.”
  • Jesus came “to seek” (Luke 19:10). That word ties Thursday back to Tuesday: the question “Where art thou?” finally came on foot.

Quotes for this day

“In his lessons and his mighty works, Christ is a perfect revelation of God. This Christ declares through the inspired evangelist. ‘No man hath seen God at any time,’ he says; ‘the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.’ ‘No man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.’ These words show the importance of studying Christ’s character. Only by knowing Christ can we know God.”

The Review and Herald, July 20, 1897, par. 10. Open this paragraph. Compiled in In Heavenly Places, p. 250, which the lesson prints

The Review and Herald, July 20, 1897, par. 10. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the lesson prints this paragraph. The last sentence, “Only by knowing Christ can we know God,” is the measure for every prophet this quarter. Read it at the end of the 16–27 block, after the class has answered.

William G. Johnsson in the Andrews Bible Commentary: the old revelation came in fragments, a little here and a little there, and so was incomplete. The new comes in one climactic speech of the Father, at one time, in one person: His Son. In Jesus all Old Testament revelation is gathered up and surpassed. (Paraphrase, pp. 1824, 1825.)

God has always revealed His will to His servants the prophets through visions and dreams, and promises to continue doing so (Joel 2:28; Amos 3:7). (Paraphrase.)

“These last days” is equivalent to “in our time”. Bible writers sometimes speak of events around Christ’s first advent as happening in the “last days”. (Paraphrase.)

“The prophets spoke about God. The Son spoke as God. So any prophet, at any time, is measured by one thing: do they make Jesus clearer?”

Spare question

From William Earnhardt’s Teaching Plan, ssnet.

“A friend says: God made the world, set the laws of nature going, and then because of sin left us on our own. Which verse from this week would you show them, and why that one?”

Friday: Ellen G. White

2 October · minutes 27–33, one sentence

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, chapters 1–6, pp. 17–63

What this day is doing

Introducing a modern prophet not through her visions but through her conversion.

Points to hold

  • Facts from the lesson: born 26 November 1827 in Gorham, Maine, a twin with Elizabeth. At nine a classmate’s stone struck her face and her schooling ended. Baptized by immersion into the Methodist Church in 1842.
  • She feared God and felt “forever lost.” Part of that fear came from the teaching of an eternally burning hell, which she left behind when she understood the state of the dead.
  • A Methodist minister, Levi Stockman, helped her see God’s love. The lesson says it was as if God spoke to her in her despair.
  • Her life follows the shape of this week: hiding in fear, then sought and found. She was found first, and sent after.

Quotes for this day

“In my mind the justice of God eclipsed His mercy and love. The mental anguish I passed through at this time was very great. I had been taught to believe in an eternally burning hell; and as I thought of the wretched state of the sinner without God, without hope, I was in deep despair. I feared that I should be lost, and that I should live throughout eternity suffering a living death. The horrifying thought was ever before me, that my sins were too great to be forgiven, and that I should be forever lost.”

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, p. 29.3. Open this paragraph

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, p. 29.3. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: for anyone who assumes a prophet must have been sure from childhood. The paragraph she wrote that belongs in the room is in Section 7.

Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 740.1. Open this paragraph

Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 740.1. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the Teacher Comments call the fatherly love of God her favourite theme for life. In reserve.

“Ellen White did not begin as a prophet. She began as a girl hiding from God in fear, and she was found.”

One sentence in the 27–33 block. Do not open a discussion of her authority this week; see Section 8.

Spare question

“Ellen Harmon wrote that she once saw the Father as a stern tyrant, and later as a kind and tender parent. She went to church faithfully. Where does a faithful churchgoer get that first picture of God?”

5 The Two Questions Worth Real Time

Both are self-contained: the setup carries the facts, then the question opens the judgment. A member who has not read the lesson can still answer.

minutes 6–16, Tuesday block

“Adam and Eve hid. God came and asked: where art thou? He knew the answer. Then He asked three more questions, and only after that did He pronounce judgment.”

“Why would a God who already knew choose to ask instead of simply telling? And what did Adam do with the chance?”

Why it matters

God’s first sentence after sin sets the nature of every prophetic word after it. If it is a question, then prophecy is at heart a search, not only an announcement.

Answers to expect

“So Adam would confess.” That is SDABC’s answer, and right. “To give him a chance.” Some will say: so the whole universe could see God is fair. That is a great controversy reading, and legitimate; Ellen G. White writes that Satan would point to all this evil as the result of God’s work in creating man (Steps to Christ, p. 17). Examination before verdict answers that charge.

How to keep it open

The Sabbath-School answer that will close this: “God already knew, so it was rhetorical.” Do not argue. Ask a second person to read 3:12 and say what Adam did with the chance. Then: “The question gave Adam a way out. Adam used it to point. When did we last use the same door the same way?” Wait. Then read SDABC on 3:9 from the Tuesday card.

minutes 16–27, Thursday block

“Hebrews 1 says God once spoke through the prophets, at sundry times and in divers manners, but now through His Son. Philip had been with Jesus three years and still said: shew us the Father. Jesus answered: he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.”

“If the Son is God’s fullest way of speaking, why would God still use prophets after Him? And what must a prophet after Jesus never do?”

Why it matters

This is the question of the whole quarter, asked in week one with the right measure. A class that answers it now will test every later week by the same measure.

Answers to expect

“To point to Jesus.” “For the last days.” Someone will cite Rev. 19:10: the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. For the second half: never add to the gospel, never replace the Bible, never make Jesus less clear. Someone may also say: “So we don’t need Ellen White.” See Section 8.

How to keep it open

Do not settle Ellen G. White’s standing today; the quarter has twelve more weeks. Bring each answer back to John 14:9: “Does this prophet help me know the face of Jesus better, or does it stand in for that face?” Then read the Review and Herald paragraph from the Thursday card.

6 Background the Class Does Not Have

1. “Where art thou?” is one word

In Hebrew the question in 3:9 is a single word: ayyekkâh. Not a long interrogation. One word, like a parent calling a child in a quiet house.

The verb before it, “called”, is qârâ’. The Teacher Comments note the same word is used when God calls Abraham: “I called him alone” (Isa. 51:2). The word for a prophetic call is already used in the garden.

This changes how 3:9 reads. The scene is a trial, with examination before verdict (Davidson). But its opening line is a call. The two do not conflict: God’s judgment begins with a search.

2. “By the prophets” and “in Son”

The KJV reads “by the prophets” and “by his Son.” The Greek is en tois prophētais, “in the prophets”, with the article; then en huiō, “in Son”, with no article and no “his”. Roughly: in one who is Son. The stress falls on what kind of Speaker, not only on who.

Johnsson, quoted in the Teacher Comments, sums it up: the old came in fragments; the new came in one person. This changes how Heb. 1:1, 2 reads. The prophets are not demoted. They are placed: they are the pieces, and the Son is the whole.

3. Cherubim: the fence that became a door

The first cherubim in the Bible stand east of Eden, blocking the way to the tree of life (Gen. 3:24). The next cherubim, made by human hands, sit over the ark of the covenant in the most holy place. And there God says: “there I will meet with thee… from between the two cherubims” (Exod. 25:22). The purpose is stated a few verses earlier: “that I may dwell among them” (25:8).

Here an Adventist distinctive stands on its own without being forced. The sanctuary is not a side topic; it is God’s answer to Genesis 3:24. The symbol that once marked a closed way becomes a meeting place. And Hebrews, the same letter as the Memory Text, invites us to “come boldly unto the throne of grace” (Heb. 4:16). At the end: “they shall see his face” (Rev. 22:4). Name the link once, then return to this week’s text.

7 Ellen G. White for This Week

The assigned Friday reading: Ellen G. White, Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, chapters 1–6, pp. 17–63. Open the contents. The Ellen G. White Estate’s Further Study page for this lesson also suggests Merlin D. Burt, “My Burden Left Me”, Adventist Review, October 25, 2001, pp. 8–12, on the stages of her conversion.

“My Burden Left Me” is by Merlin Burt, not Ellen G. White. If you quote it, say “Burt writes.” And “it was as if God spoke to her” is the lesson’s sentence, not hers.

The paragraph worth reading aloud

“Faith now took possession of my heart. I felt an inexpressible love for God, and had the witness of His Spirit that my sins were pardoned. My views of the Father were changed. I now looked upon Him as a kind and tender parent, rather than a stern tyrant compelling men to a blind obedience. My heart went out toward Him in a deep and fervent love.”

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, p. 39.1. Open this paragraph

“Iman sekarang menguasai hati saya.

Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, p. 39.1. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: the lesson prints this on Friday, and it is Genesis 3 in reverse: someone who once hid in fear now runs to the Father. Read it at the end of the 27–33 block if there is time. Stop after “deep and fervent love.” The next sentence, on the joy of obedience, is true but moves attention away from the changed picture of the Father, which is the point.

The lesson’s own Spirit of Prophecy notes

The lesson prints Ellen G. White quotations every day. Nearly all come from compilations (Reflecting Christ, The Faith I Live By, That I May Know Him, Lift Him Up, To Be Like Jesus, In Heavenly Places, Sons and Daughters of God). Compilations are legitimate, but this guide traces each quotation to its original: Wednesday’s from Lift Him Up, p. 324, for example, is Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 67. If you read one aloud, name the original.

The verified text is the English. The Indonesian tab on each card is a working translation. If you hold a published Indonesian edition, use that.

8 Handling the Hard Spots

“If Jesus is God’s final word, why do we need Ellen White?”

An honest objection, and it comes straight out of the Memory Text. Do not answer with a long defense; this quarter will spend weeks on it.

Two things from the text. First, Hebrews 1 compares the prophets before Christ with Christ. But the New Testament itself, after Christ ascended, still speaks of the gift of prophecy: Peter quotes Joel 2:28 at Pentecost (Acts 2:17), and Paul writes “Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things” (1 Thess. 5:20, 21). Second, the gift after the Son does not compete with the Son: “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Rev. 19:10).

Ellen G. White herself placed her writings under the Bible, and this is what helps most in class:

“The Spirit was not given—nor can it ever be bestowed—to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures explicitly state that the word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested.”

The Great Controversy, p. vii.3. Open this paragraph

The Great Controversy, p. vii.3. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

“Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light.”

The Review and Herald, January 20, 1903, par. 9. Open this paragraph. Compiled in Colporteur Ministry, p. 125

The Review and Herald, January 20, 1903, par. 9. Working translation, not a published Indonesian edition

Use: two sentences in her own words. Read one, then park the question: “This quarter will test every prophet by the Bible. Including her.”

“Genesis 3:15 is about snakes and people. Christians read Christ into it.”

SDABC itself grants the verse is also literally true: there is enmity between serpents and people wherever they meet. So agree with half of it.

Then let Scripture interpret Scripture. Revelation names “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan” (Rev. 12:9), and a few verses later the dragon makes war with “the remnant of her seed” (Rev. 12:17). The words of Genesis 3 return in the Bible’s last book. It was not later Christians who read Christ into Genesis 3:15; the Bible did it first.

“God at Sinai sounds frightening: bounds, threats, keep away. Isn’t that the stern tyrant Ellen Harmon feared?”

A good question, and it links Wednesday to Friday. Read Exod. 19:21, 22 carefully: the reason for the bound is written there, “lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.” The bound protects; it does not reject.

Steps to Christ, p. 17, explains why: a sinner could not be happy in God’s presence; His glory would be a consuming fire to him. Distance is mercy to sinners. And the God who set bounds at Sinai is the God who, a few chapters later, asks for a sanctuary “that I may dwell among them” (Exod. 25:8).

Read Genesis 3 tonight from beginning to end. Count God’s questions and whom they are addressed to; there are four, to two people, and none to the serpent. Have Revelation 12:9 ready for the objection about 3:15.

Where the lesson is thin

Wednesday says God’s gift of clothing was a symbolic act depicting their future redemption. Genesis 3:21 does not say that. The text only says God made coats of skins and clothed them.

The reading is still reasonable, and SDABC holds it: for there to be skins, an animal died, and one chapter later Abel brings the firstlings of his flock (Gen. 4:4). Teach it honestly: the text says God covered them; the church reads in it the sacrifice to come. Keeping the two apart trains the class for a quarter about interpreting prophecy.

Sunday also jumps from Genesis 2 to sociology and to Satan’s aim of destroying the family. That is true, but it is not in the day’s verses. If time is short, let it pass.

A Appendix A: Every Bible Text in the KJV

A1. Memory Text and Key Text

Heb 1:1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Heb 1:2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Gen 3:9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

A2. Genesis 3:1-24, for the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday blocks

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Teaching note: count God’s questions in verses 9, 11 and 13: four before the judgment in verse 14. The promise in verse 15 sits inside the judgment, not after it.

A3. Luke 15:11-32, for the Tuesday block

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

Teaching note: in verse 20 the father sees him “when he was yet a great way off.” He was watching before the son arrived.

A4. Exodus 19:16-22 and 20:18, 19, for the Wednesday block

16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.

22 And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

Teaching note: 20:19 is the first request for a go-between, and it comes from a frightened people.

Where this guide’s material comes from

The official Teacher Comments this week supplied four scholars, paraphrased here only: Richard M. Davidson, Flame of Yahweh (2007), pp. 58, 59; Dru Johnson, The Universal Story: Genesis 1–11 (2018), p. 52; Jiří Moskala in The Gift of Prophecy in Scripture and History (2015), p. 11; and William G. Johnsson in the Andrews Bible Commentary (2022), pp. 1824, 1825. The books themselves were not opened directly. The Teacher Comments also supplied the note on qârâ’ in Isaiah 51:2 and on Genesis 3:15 as the chapter’s center.

Sabbath School Net: William Earnhardt’s Teaching Plan for this lesson supplied two spare questions (the child asking about God’s face, and the deist friend). Bruce Cameron’s Teaching Outline and Corinne Knopper’s hymn column had not been posted when this guide was built.

The Ellen G. White Estate Further Study page for lesson 1 suggests Life Sketches chapters 1–6 and the Merlin Burt article.

The Hebrew of Genesis 3:9 and Isaiah 51:2 and the Greek of Hebrews 1:1, 2 were checked against the Masoretic Text and the Textus Receptus. The Biblical Research Institute was not consulted; no contested point this week needed it.
